The Office "Casino Night" (2006)

Coming into The Office just this season I have quite a bit of catching up to do. Unfortunately the biggest problem is knowing where all the characters stand (job and relationship-wise) three years down the line. The biggest of which is probably that Jim and Pam do not become a couple until the fourth season premiere.

However this in no way diminished my love for the second season finale which I watched last night where Jim finally confesses his love for Pam and then kisses her after she tells him they should remain friends. Rooting for Jim all season to only see his heart break when Pam tells him he misunderstood their relationship is gut wrenching enough but John Krasinski lets one tear drop at the exact right moment which puts the audience right there with him in terms of emotion. The tide is turned however when in a few minutes Jim walks up to Pam and kisses her which she also returns ending the episode (and season) with them staring at each other wondering what to do next. It was a great episode and it must have been so tormenting to wait the entire summer to see what happens. As it happens TBS aired the season three premiere right after it. These scenes served as the ultimate culmination of the PB & J love affair we've watched brewing for the first 2 season (until the writers stretched it out another season the following year) and did not disappoint.

Not to be outdone by the PB & J drama there are some great character moments from the other players that make this episode very entertaining. Michael's duel dating disaster at the Casino Night provides some awkward moments but ends with showing that Jim and Pam don't have a monopoly of secret longing as we see Jan packed a bag to spend the night in Scranton but didn't book a hotel. Creed's admission that he likes to steal things is great for the character and reminds me of the Seinfeld episode "The Bookstore" where we learn all old people steal. His happiness at the immoral act makes it all the more entertaining. I also really loved the kiss Dwight planted on Angela at the craps table and the immediate slap she gives him in return but the topper was the smile to herself as she walked away. And I guess I can't end without giving a shout out to Kevin's band Scratonicity (although in 2 years time he'll be with Scratonicity II).

Favorite moment: Actually it was when Jim and Pam went heads up in poker. The fact that both of them can communicate so much with looks is never more apparent. From Pam's head bob and smile as she looks at her cards to Jim's squint as he tries to figure if she's bluffing and and the giant grin he has when he calls made it a fantastic PB & J moment. Kind of gets overshadowed at the end however with the whole love admission.

I can't agree more about the Pam and Jim facial communication thing. Especially in the office when Pam is at her desk and Jim is saying something to Dwight or something. How about some House comments!! The Season finale was UNBELIEVABLE... so good. Total tearjerker. Also the Jose Gonzales music (my favorite artist). Kind of miss Amber now, even though I never liked her. Weird.

That was the thing about CTB, it's that rare occasion she was a character you loved to hate and then you realized you grew to like her. Very rare to find done really well. The finale was unbelievable, an excellent two-parter which ended the hit-and-miss season with a bang. Cuddy as a stripper, exploring the inner thoughts of House and some serious House/Wilson drama to boot.
